- Over time, excessive alcohol use can lead to the development of chronic diseases, neurological impairments and social problems. These include but are not limited to: Cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, colon, and breast. In general, the risk of cancer increases with increasing amounts of alcohol.
- Alcohol is metabolized in the liver by enzymes, but the liver can only metabolize a very small amount of alcohol, leaving the excess liquor to circulate throughout the body.
- According to a recent sleep study at the University of Harvard, alcohol consumption within several hours of bedtime appeared to disrupt sleep and cause a person to awaken several hours into the sleep process and have problems returning to sleep without difficulty; this sleep disruption can lead to daytime fatigue and drowsiness.
